California Highway responded to the reported crash on southbound I-15 at the Main Street exit around 3:40am, Sunday, August 4, 2024.

CHP said the driver drifted into the lane split area, hitting sand barrels before driving over multiple traffic cones. The collision sent the sand barrels across all lanes and spread sand across the two left lanes.

“I think the driver may have fallen asleep or was driving drunk before crashing into the roadside construction site,” CHP said. Speed may have also played a factor in the collision.

Lanes at Main Street were shut down for around two hours as traffic was diverted to the offramp and then back onto the freeway, using the onramp, while crews from Caltrans and the construction workers cleaned up the sand from the barrels and picked up the traffic cones.

No injuries have been reported.

We will update this story with more information when the CHP’s preliminary accident report is available. Additional details were limited at the time. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Victorville Office.
