FONTANA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> The driver of a stolen vehicle has died after a police chase ended in a head-on crash on Interstate 15 in Fontana Monday afternoon, according to authorities. (Photo above is credit by Eddie Rober)
The incident happened about 1:40pm on Monday August 12, 2024 on northbound I-15 at the Summit Avenue exit on the city of Fontana.
Fontana police officers observed a white 2004 GMC Yukon SUV that was presumed stolen. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not comply, sparking the pursuit.
The driver of the GMC was traveling on Seirra Avenue and turned onto the northbound I-15 freeway offramp heading in the wrong direction. Officers then terminated the pursuit at that time for safety reasons.
The suspect sped down on the shoulder of the freeway going the wrong way. As he attempted to exit the freeway by using the Summit Ave. onramp but crashed head-on into a white semi tractor-trailer.
San Bernardino County Fire Department and Paramedics were called to the scene. The suspect had to be freed from the vehicle after the crash. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Officials said he suffered major injuries.
About an hour later the suspect was deceased at the hospital.
The Summit Ave. onramp was blocked for several hours while officers investigated in the collision.
