MOUNTAIN PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Caltrans has launched new dynamic electronic message signs (EMS) on southbound Interstate 15 at the California–Nevada state line near Primm, as announced by Caltrans District 8.
The $3.7 million project was funded by the 2022 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and implements state-of-the-art design and technology standards for improved traffic operations at state line.
The system officially went live on Thursday October 8, 2026.
The new EMS signs covers about 6 miles of southbound I-15 from the stateline down to the Mountain Pass agricultural inspection station.
The Shoulder Travel Rules: The dynamic signs inform motorists when they can use the right shoulder as an active travel lane (indicated by a green arrow) versus when it must remain closed.
What’s the purpose of the dynamic signs. It’s to smooth out severe congestion and improve traffic flow for drivers heading back into California from Las Vegas.
Holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day and other 3 day holidays the green arrow will be “ON” to travel in that lane.
