FONTANA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Strong winds toppled a big rig and caused two other vehicles to crash on southbound Interstate 15 Freeway near near Duncan Canyon Road In Fontana Saturday morning.
Powerful Santa Ana winds have knocked over a big rig from reports on the CHP traffic log, Saturday morning. The first incident was reported just before 2am Saturday January 22, 2022, on southbound I-15 just before the Duncan Canyon Road exit.
A Frito-Lay big rig was on it’s side and was reported to be blocking the #2,#3 and #4 lanes. Minutes later a red Hyundai Santa Fe crash into the Frito-Lay big rig that was overturned. A white big rig pulling a trailer then swerved to the left and crashed through the center divider guardrail. It was not reported what he was hauling. All three incidents were reported to be separate incidents.
The overturned Frito-Lay big rig was reported to be hauling chips and was leaking fuel and natural gas from the cab of the big rig. Hazmat crews were requested for the leaks. CHP issued a SIG-Alert for all southbound lanes. Drivers were able to bypass the scene by using the offramp and onramp to get back on the freeway. Lanes were reopened by 7am, the tow company pushed the trailer in the center divider and will pickup the trailer when the winds die down. Caltrans is out repairing the guardrail.
Just minor injuries were reported, some cuts and bruises to all three drivers. Strong winds are believed to have caused the crash. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Inland Office. CHP says additional information will be updated as it becomes available.
